Foam prints are the light, simple way to put a picture on the wall. The artwork is printed on a 5 mm black foam board, with no frame around the front. It suits walls where you want a flat, graphic look.
The board is rigid with a smooth face, so lines stay crisp and colour fields look even. Strong black and cream drawings suit it well. Large flat areas of colour show the smoothness best.
With no glass in front, there is nothing to reflect a window or lamp. You can hang it opposite a bright window and still read the whole picture. Hold off on very small sizes for detailed drawings, since fine lines need a little room.
The board is black, so the side shows as a slim dark line. Against a pale wall it reads as a neat outline, and on a mid-toned wall as a thin shadow. On a dark wall the edge disappears.
It's slim enough to hang in a group without crowding the wall. Rows of the same size look the neatest. A pale wall makes the dark edge look like a frame you did not have to buy.
Because it's thin and light, it's easy to rearrange. Try three in a row with an even gap, or one large piece over a desk. Start with the biggest piece and build outwards.
Lay paper cut to size on the floor first, then move it to the wall once the order feels right. Keep the gaps equal and the top edges level. A shelf or ledge works for the smaller sizes, with the board leaned against the wall.
Graphic work with clear shapes and strong contrast stands out on a flat board. Soft, blended pieces work too, though the lack of texture means they read as calmer. Look at how much of the artwork is dark, since that will match the edge.
A black and white print suits the dark edge. Warm colours add a little life to a cool, neutral room. If the artwork has a lot of black, the edge disappears into it.
If you'd like a warmer surface, try wood prints. The grain shows through lighter areas, which foam does not have. Foam is the plainest of these, with no texture and no frame to think about.
For fabric with depth, see canvas prints. Foam stays flat to the wall, and canvas sits further out, so choose by how much presence you want. Pick foam when you want the image to be the only thing on the wall.
Sizes run from 40x60 cm to 70x100 cm, depending on the artwork. Tape up the outline first and check it from your usual seat. Leave it up for a day if you can.
Keep it indoors and dry, and handle the corners gently. Use a soft, dry cloth and skip sprays. Carry the board flat so it does not flex, and measure the wall space so the dark edge has some air around it.
Because the edge is black, foam prints pair naturally with black lamps, picture ledges and window frames. Repeating a dark tone makes a wall feel planned. Brass or wood accents add warmth next to it.
In a pale room the boards give a clear, graphic outline. In a dark room they settle quietly into the wall. Decide whether you want the edge to be seen, then choose which wall to hang it on.
